This illustration depicts the left hemisphere of the human brain, with colored pixels representing the cell types composing the brain. Cellular analysis of the adult and developing brain is reported in a collection of papers from the BICCN consortium published in Science, Science Advances [with the cover showing the brain’s right hemisphere], and Science Translational Medicine. The results uncover the genetic organization of the human brain.

After 17 years underground, a recently molted periodical cicada dries its wings in central Maryland before joining with billions of others to chorus, mate, and lay eggs. Researchers found that during the 2021 Brood X emergence, many species of birds altered their diets to feed on this massive resource pulse, markedly altering the dynamics of forest food webs.

The hypothalamus is a small structure deep inside the brain that is connected to a vast number of other brain regions and tirelessly interacts with them. It controls and modulates many basic bodily functions to ensure the survival of the organism under constantly changing circumstances.

A gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) browses on woody plants in the Loisaba Wilderness, Kenya. Herbivory is a key force that structures the vegetation that is foundational to many ecosystems. Whereas herbivory can foster plant diversity in natural ecosystems, it can suppress plant abundance and diversity in degraded ecosystems undergoing restoration. Managing herbivory can enhance the success of vegetation restoration efforts, which are increasing globally.
