In the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan in the 16th century, the skulls of human sacrificial victims were slipped onto wooden posts and displayed on a monumental rack. Archaeologists at Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History discovered the remains of the rack and two accompanying skull towers during recent excavations in downtown Mexico City.

Growing human populations are transforming our planet at an increasing rate, leading to climatic changes, diminished resources, and loss of biodiversity. Continuing on the current path is likely to endanger our own well-being and that of other species, but changing course involves tough choices. In the Tomorrow's Earth special series, we explore paths to a more sustainable future.

An analysis of pharmaceutical payments to physicians after they voted on drug approval recommendations suggests that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) needs to consider whether prospects of future rewards could influence its advisory panels. The investigation also indicates that the FDA may have missed more traditional conflicts of interest for those advisers. Another story looks at revolving-door concerns for FDA staff.

Artist's impression of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica. Spherical digital optical modules (DOMs), each about 35 cm in diameter, are positioned up to 2.5 km deep in the ice. More than 5 000 DOMs make up a cubic-kilometer detector weighing more than a billion tons. The DOMs detect the faint flash of light created when a high-energy neutrino interacts with the ice.
