Wahlenbergbreen glacier in Svalbard, Norway, is seen in September 2013, as its flow began speeding up. At the peak of the surge, beginning in 2015, the ice advanced at 9 meters per day, bulldozing everything in its path. A glacier’s shape, the nature of its bed, and climate change can interact to trigger normally quiescent glaciers to surge.

Subsistence fisher casting a net on the Mekong River, Nong Khai Province, Thailand. The future of the freshwater fishery in this region is uncertain, given the looming development of extensive hydropower in the basin. Sabo et al. have developed an algorithm for coordinated dam operations that improves food futures over a scenario of restored or "natural" flows.

Artistic rendering of a driverless car in operation. Automotive and technology companies say that we are well on the road to deploying autonomous vehicles. But the trip could be bumpy, given consumer apprehension about relinquishing control and uncertainty over whether driverless cars will usher in a new age of safer, greener, and more convenient transportation-or simply add to existing problems.

Illustration of two neutron stars spiraling into each other. On 17 August 2017, detectors in the United States and Italy spotted gravitational waves from such an event. Seconds later, a satellite detected a gamma-ray burst, and more than 70 observatories subsequently studied the aftermath in every wavelength. This scientific bonanza is Science's 2017 Breakthrough of the Year.
